What is clipping and how do clippers get paid?

Clipping explained simply: who cuts the videos, who pays, how views and sales are counted, and what you need to get started.

Clipping means cutting a long video into short clips and posting them on TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and X, and clippers are the people paid to do it, per view or per sale. You’ve probably seen their work: podcast clips with big bold captions, livestream moments reposted by ten different accounts, movie scenes cut down to 30 seconds.

This guide explains what clipping is, who gets what out of it, and how it actually works on Skyroclip.

Who does what in clipping?

Clipping means cutting a long video into short clips and posting them on TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and X. The clipper is paid by the content owner, either per view or per sale their clips generate.

Three players share the work:

Player What they bring What they get
The creator or brand the long-form content and a budget reach or customers, without producing dozens of videos themselves
The clipper the editing, their accounts, their consistency pay per view or per sale
The platform matchmaking, view and sales tracking, payouts a commission

Why do creators and brands pay for clipping?

A long video mostly reaches people who already follow you. Short videos, on the other hand, get pushed by algorithms to people who don’t know you yet. And more and more, they’re found through search: people type a question into TikTok or YouTube the way they would into Google.

One creator can’t post 50 clips a day across four platforms. Fifty clippers can. Each one tests their own angles and titles on their own accounts, and the best moments end up finding their audience.

How do clippers get paid?

There are two main ways to pay a clipper.

Per view (CPM). The creator sets a rate per 1,000 views. The formula: views ÷ 1,000 × CPM. At a €1.50 CPM, a clip with 40,000 views earns €60. Most campaigns add a minimum number of views per clip and a cap per clip.

Per sale (CPA). The clipper gets a tracked link. They’re paid a fixed amount every time someone who came through that link buys or signs up. That’s how brand campaigns work on Skyroclip: a clear price per sale, no percentage to work out.

How does clipping work on Skyroclip?

  1. The creator launches a campaign: source videos, rules (length, required mentions, topics to avoid), payout model and budget.
  2. Clippers join it from the campaign list and see the keywords to use in their titles and captions.
  3. They post their clips on their own accounts, then submit each clip’s link.
  4. Skyroclip checks that the clip comes from one of the clipper’s accounts, tracks views regularly and counts the sales that came through their link.
  5. The creator approves the clips, and clippers are paid according to the campaign rules. The budget is capped: it’s impossible to spend more than what was funded.

What do you need to start clipping?

As a clipper: a phone or computer, an editing app (CapCut is enough), an account on at least one of the four platforms, and time to post consistently. Our guide on making money with clipping walks through the first steps.

As a creator: long-form content with good moments (podcasts, livestreams, interviews, tutorials), clear rules and a budget, even a modest one. Our guide on launching a clipping campaign explains how to set it up.

What are the limits of clipping?

  • Clipping won’t make content go viral if nobody cares about it. Clippers amplify what already works in short form.
  • Beginners don’t earn much at first. It takes several weeks of posting for an account to take off.
  • Rights matter. Only clip content whose owner has given permission; reposting other people’s videos without authorization can get your clips taken down and your accounts suspended.

In short

Clipping is shared distribution work: the creator provides the material and the budget, clippers provide the editing and the reach, and everyone is paid for results, based on real views or sales.
